When I started having depression again this year, I took that as a sign that it was time to work on Riak’s story again. It helped, but this time, the depression didn’t go away until I started taking medication. It wasn’t fun to go through, but I hope that the experience has made Riak feel more real.
This draft involved a lot of reorganizing and adding new scenes. I needed to develop Zelka’s (the love interest) character better. I also felt it was important to show Riak going to the psychiatrist and taking medication (such as it was with 1930’s equivalent) instead of trying to deal with PTSD on his own. I was the most excited to add details learned from research about Riak losing his tongue.
Now, it’s time to send it out for a critique. It may not be published any time soon, but it was good practice.
